America's Answer to the Tiger Mother
Carol Cooke is a career American educator with extensive experience in a variety of areas within the field of education. She has worked with children of all ages, backgrounds, and socio-economic levels. From classroom instruction, through professional development consultation, and school administration to curriculum coordination, her focus has always been on helping children to become the best that they can be. As a curriculum coordinator she has developed curriculum to help teachers enhance the self-image of children and to incorporate higher level thinking skills activities into all subjects within the curriculum. As a professional development consultant, she trained teachers in various states and presented at national conferences. As an administrator, she worked with parents and children to improve relationships, promote self-discipline, and enhance learning. However, like Amy Chua, author of The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, she became concerned about the troubling lack of effective parenting among too many Americans contributing to a decline in child motivation, achievement, behavior and moral compass. Interestingly however, the interventions she advances are often the polar opposite of Chua’s. Her book, America’s Answer to the Tiger Mother, How to Raise Successful, Happy Children, delineates the areas of accord and discord between the two philosophies as well as the possible cultural basis for them.
